Dates: March 1 & 2, 2019
This is an excellent place to start if you are just getting into backcountry skiing. This is a 1.5 day class that teaches participants basic avalanche awareness, companion rescue, and provides an introduction to the concepts and equipment used in backcountry skiing and recreating.
Friday night (3 hrs) at Ski AK in Anchorage:
- Basic avalanche awareness and safety
- Intro to proper equipment (selection and use)
Saturday (all day) at Arctic Valley:
- Trip planning & safe travel
- Companion rescue techniques and practice
- Field session tour – practice concepts learned
All levels of beginners welcome. Modes of travel: alpine touring, telemark, splitboard, snowboard/snowshoe, snowshoe.
Required Equipment: Students must have their own backcountry and avalanche equipment including beacon, probe, and shovel*. Skis, snowshoes, snowboards, or nordic equipment are acceptable.
