Arctic Valley’s public use cabin at the top of Chair 2 is an awesome place to spend a night! With views of Anchorage and Cook Inlet, and the solitude of being miles from the city, it’s an experience like no other.
Arctic Valley’s Chair 2 Public Use Cabin is accessed via an intermediate-difficulty hike with about 1300 feet of elevation gain from Arctic Valley’s parking lots. We recommend taking the Rendezvous Peak/Gordon-Lyon trail to the Saddle, then cutting around Rendezvous Peak (there are trails around both the front and back) to the cabin. The trail under the chairlift, while a bit shorter, is heavily eroded, very steep in places, and is not recommended. See the ‘Map’ tab for recommended route.
The cabin sleeps 4 people on 2 queen-sized, padded plywood bunks. The large deck on the front side is a great place to relax and enjoy the view. For blustery days, there’s a counter inside with seating, electric lights, and propane heat. Electrical outlets are provided for charging devices, and AT&T cell service is generally good. An incinerator toilet is provided.
There is no running water or trash service in the cabin. Pack out what you pack in, and bring your own water. Please leave the cabin tidy for the next guests. Campfires are not allowed at Arctic Valley. Pets are allowed in the cabin.
Check in is 4pm, check out is noon.
The chairlift ride option is designed to give guests (particularly families with kids) who have lots of gear an option to experience the cabin without someone having to make multiple trips up and down the mountain. We do not recommend staying at the cabin if you are not able to hike to it, as hiking down may be as difficult as hiking up, and the chairlift ride may be cancelled due to inclement weather.
- Lift ride must be purchased at least 5 days in advance
- Lift rides are available Wednesday through Sunday
- Lift ride is up only – everyone will need to walk down
- Check in by 3:45 at the Rendezvous Cafe. Everyone must be on the lift by 4:15 or the ride will be cancelled with 50% refund.
- Cancellation allowed 24 hours in advance for a full refund, inside 24 hours is a 50% refund
- If cancelled by Arctic Valley for any reason, the lift ride only will be fully refunded.
- We can pack coolers, backpacks, etc. on extra chairs. Loose shopping bags and individual items are more difficult to accommodate.
- Reserve by checking the ‘chairlift ride’ option during the booking process.

Once made, your reservation is not refundable and date changes are not allowed. If you can’t make your reservation, please pass it along to a friend. Beware in the spring & fall – due to our elevation summer is shorter than you may find at other public use cabins! It’s not uncommon to have snow at the top of the mountain until early June and in late September. Please note that the military occasionally does live fire exercises on Arctic Valley Road that delay traffic. You can find the schedule here (under the Arctic Valley Road tab).
The cabin is available for rent from June to the end of September, and reservations are released a daily 6-months in advance. Check in time is 4pm, and check out is 12pm. You will be emailed a code to access the cabin. Please email info@arcticvalley.org if you haven’t received it 24 hours prior to check in.
The cabin costs $125 per night for public and Anchorage Ski Club/Arctic Valley basic members; $100 for current year Anchorage Ski Club/Arctic Valley regular, Black Diamond, or life members. To access the member rate, enter coupon code Ch2Member during checkout. If you’re not certain of your membership status, email us at info@arcticvalley.org. You can purchase a membership here.
